My name is Tracy, and I’m an addict!

Some call it the most pervasive and addictive drug in America.  No, I’m not talking about crack coccaine, heroine or weed.  This substance is actually classified as a poison…devoid of any nutrients.  Even worse, this substance actually leaches nutrients from your body.

I recall taking an anthropology course taught by Dr. Rosa DeJorio, an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of North Florida (go Ospreys!).       Dr.  DeJorio is an anthropologist and scholar of West Africa and the Beng (tribe) in West Africa.  Having studied the Beng for decades, Dr. DeJorio recounted that, historically, the Beng had extremely, even non-existent occurrences of diseases like cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure. It was only after the introduction of, you guessed it, refined sugar and salt, that their health started to tank.  Sad thing is, even though I know all this, I absolutely love the stuff.  Like I said, I’m a sugar addict!

Here I am Facing Change again.

The Goal:  Drastically reduce or eliminate refined sugars for 90 days.

Why 90 days?  Well this is the time period during which I am embarking on my P90X® journey.  Coincidentally, maintaining a proper diet is a key part of the P90X® fitness plan.  In case you haven’t considered the significance of the goal, it cuts out a lot what I currently eat and drink.  No sodas, sweet tea, milkshakes, cakes, cookies or pies.  I’m not going to cut out breads completely, but I will cut back.

Wish me luck!

  1. Hello my name is Ezekiel and I’m an addict! Great post Tracy! I can definitely relate. I’m drinking only water for a month and maybe can add this goal as well. :)

  2. I think I’ll be cutting out the sugars as well..
Have you finally cut them out for sure?!

  3. @ Zeke - I feel you on that water for a month thing. My wife did it for 40 days! Can you believe it?

@ Lionel - I’m trying, man. It’s sooo hard to kick the habit.

  4. Man, you didn’t tell me about this!

  5. Hey Damien. Yeah…uh…I need to update this post. I’m feeling just like I imagine a crack head does. More details to come!
